Introduction
On the occasion of ABILA’s centennial anniversary, International Law Weekend 2022 (ILW 2022) invites reflection on the past and future of international law. Which foundations from the last century of international law should remain in the next century, and which should be reimagined? Today, the international legal order faces extraordinary challenges—threats to the peace, persistent economic and social inequalities, environmental and global health risks, and populist isolationism. Yet there are also many ways that international law has succeeded over the past century in resolving differences, keeping the peace, protecting human rights, and facilitating human flourishing. Present circumstances offer the opportunity to reevaluate the core features of international law. ABILA’s centennial ILW will explore the areas of international law that offer robust solutions, and those that require reinvention.
Emerging Voices Submissions
The ILW Organizing Committee invites the submission of abstracts relating to “The Next 100 Years of International Law.” We will select several abstracts for presentation at ILW 2022 as part of a panel of new and emerging professionals. The abstracts may be based upon ongoing work. While all submissions are welcome, preference will be given to papers not already published. Eligibility is restricted to applicants working in the field of international law for five years or less. Preference is given to applicants who are ABILA members. (To join ABILA, please visit: https://www.ila-americanbranch.org/membership/). Virtual participation may be possible under certain circumstances. Please indicate in your cover letter if you would require virtual participation.
Applicants must submit the following in a single PDF document:
1. a 500 word abstract of their paper;
2. a cover letter describing their professional development and a statement explaining how their submission fits with the conference theme; and
3. a curriculum vitae.
The submission deadline is August 28, 2022. Submissions should be sent to [email protected] with the subject line “Emerging Voices – ILW 2022.”
Questions may also be submitted to: [email protected].
Submissions will be competitively selected in a peer review process. Applicants will be notified by September 9, 2022.
ILW 2022 is scheduled for October 20-22, 2022 and will be held in New York City. Accepted applicants will be invited to present their papers at the Emerging Voices panel, which will be chaired by a senior scholar or practitioner. Accepted applicants are encouraged to attend other panels, plenary sessions, and to take part in the Members Meeting and networking events.
